B’s Story
“B”, a single mom with two young children, ages 1 and 2 1/2 ,became homeless due to conflict with the family she was living with. Having never been homeless before homelessness was “different… It wasn’t what I had expected… it changed my perspective on life. One day you can be living a normal life, and the next day, homeless...It’s mind blowing.” When B came to our shelter, she was a bit nervous but didn’t take long to settle. “Danielle (Family Shelter Case Manager) and Ellen (Family Shelter Night Monitor) helped me feel comfortable… They’re amazing”.
B soon got a job but was laid off because of COVID-19. Despite the setback, her family was still able to make through resources provided by partner agencies. Her son was able to receive speech therapy and her daughter, physical therapy. B and her case manager worked on finding housing and after nearly a two month wait, she and her children moved into their own apartment. Though apprehensive when she first came to the shelter, she is fond of the relationships she has built during her time here; “Everyone was in tears and gave us hugs when we left… the Family Shelter is really FAMILY, everyone becomes your family while you are here.”
