Christina’s Story: A Roof Over Her Head

Christina's journey to New Directions’ family shelter is a remarkable testament to optimism and determination. Financial constraints and an unaffordable rental market had forced her and her young daughter to live in a dilapidated motel, far from suitable living conditions. Recounting the incident that left her homeless, Christina said, "The roof fell off the hotel. They made us evacuate immediately. It fell off right as I was standing at the threshold of my front door. Luckily, my daughter and I weren't inside when it happened. We had five minutes to get everything out that we could. Someone put us up for a week at the hotel next door, but once that was over, I came here."

Christina’s journey is a true success, because she went from having nothing to securing her own apartment within a remarkably short period. This rapid success was due to her unwavering determination and proactive efforts. Even before the hotel roof collapsed, she had already started laying the groundwork by securing a Section 8 voucher and searching for a new place to live. With the guidance of New Directions, and particularly Danielle Walters, New Directions Director of Women and Family Services, Christina navigated the complexities of the Section 8 housing system and filed for First Choice health insurance. Her quick learning and initiative played a crucial role in her swift transition to permanent housing.

Christina credits her unyielding optimism and ministry background, as a Bible college graduate, for helping her maintain faith through all the challenges. "I’ve always believed that God has a plan. He wouldn’t have put me through these challenges without a reason," she reflected.

During her time at the family shelter, Christina demonstrated a strong work ethic and a sense of community. "While I was here, I did what any mother would do. I took over the kitchen and started cooking meals for the entire building. Anything Miss Danielle needed, I tried to help out."

After several months at New Directions, Christina’s housing voucher secured an apartment for her and her daughter. "When I got my apartment, I even got to spend two days with my other daughter, whom I hadn’t seen in five years. She had just turned eight. Both my girls are adopted, and now I have a place for them to stay and play, watch TV, and feel more settled."

Today, Christina expresses her desire to resume her ministry and aid other families experiencing homelessness through outreach. "Being at New Directions opened my eyes to what really goes on behind the scenes. I’ve learned so much from Miss Danielle. My goal is to help others the way she’s helped me."
