Joni’s Journey: Homeless in her Hometown

Born and raised in Myrtle Beach, Joni faced numerous hardships that led to her homelessness. She struggled with heavy marijuana use and bipolar disorder, and by 2017, she found herself homeless in her hometown, with only her dog for company, sleeping in a tent in the state park.

As months passed, Joni’s situation became increasingly dire. Finding a stable place to live was a constant challenge, often forcing her to spend nights on the streets. She eventually lost her beloved dog after repeated arrests for loitering or trespassing. The stigma of homelessness weighed heavily on her, and she sometimes used her limited funds on motel rooms, only to end up back on the streets when the money ran out.

During the harsh winter months, Joni sought refuge at the women’s shelter on "code blue" nights when it was unsafe to sleep outside due to the cold temperatures. In the shelter's kitchen, she met a kind resident who encouraged her to stay there permanently. This marked a turning point in her life. She stayed at the shelter for seven months, finding safety and a sense of community she had long missed.

With the support of New Directions, Joni moved into Snug Harbour, the New Directions’ transitional condos, and stayed there for five months while working on securing her own home. This newfound stability allowed her to rebuild her life. She received assistance with food, housing, and necessities, providing her with a much-needed foundation to get back on her feet.

Eventually, Joni was able to secure an apartment through the Eastern Carolina Housing Organization (ECHO). Joni worked hard to save money and maintain her new apartment, paying only a fraction of the rent thanks to ECHO's support. Her determination to stay off the streets and create a better life for herself never faltered.

Joni’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and community support. New Directions not only provided her with a roof over her head but also helped her forge friendships, find stability, and look towards a brighter future. She learned to manage her disability, maintain her health, and set goals, such as finding a part-time job and saving for a car.

Reflecting on her journey, Joni feels deep gratitude for New Directions and those who helped her along the way. She encourages others in similar situations to stay the course, seek out resources, and never give up hope.
