Checking the Goal List: Amanda’s Journey Forward
Eight and a half months ago, Amanda walked through the doors of New Directions’ family shelter carrying more than just a few belongings, she carried the weight of uncertainty, fear, and a determination to change her life.
At the time, Amanda was facing unimaginable challenges. After struggling with substance use and living in unstable conditions, she made a life-changing decision: to leave that environment behind for the sake of her children, and for herself. With her daughter by her side and a desire to get sober, Amanda came back to Horry County and entered the family shelter, ready for a fresh start.
“I just knew I couldn’t raise my kids like that anymore,” Amanda shared. “I wanted something better. I wanted to get clean.”
From day one, Amanda committed herself to change. Alongside her case manager, she created a goal list, one that included securing identification documents, applying for benefits like food assistance and childcare vouchers, finding employment, maintaining sobriety, and even purchasing a car. It was an ambitious list, but Amanda was determined.
And she didn’t just meet those goals, she exceeded them.
In less than a year, Amanda checked off 14 major milestones. She secured employment, regained stability for her family, and most importantly, committed to her recovery journey. Today, she is eight and a half months sober, actively participating in NA and AA, working the steps, and building a strong support system.
“I owe so much of that to being here,” she said. “If I hadn’t come to New Directions, I don’t think I would have gotten sober.”
Amanda’s journey wasn’t one she walked alone. Through partnerships with local organizations like ECHO, who helped her with housing, she was able to access additional support services that helped meet her family’s needs and remove barriers along the way. From essential resources to guidance navigating systems, that support played a key role in her success.
Beyond the tangible milestones, Amanda gained something even more lasting, life skills and confidence.
“I learned how to adult,” she said with a smile. “I didn’t know how to make those calls, ask questions, or navigate resources before. Now I do. That’s something I get to take with me.”
When asked what she would tell someone who may be hesitant to seek help, Amanda didn’t hesitate.
“They probably feel hopeless, but they don’t have to. Everything I have now started here. This can be a turning point.”
And if she had to describe New Directions in one word?
“Hope.”
It’s a word Amanda felt the moment she walked through the doors, and one she now carries with her as she steps into her next chapter: a home of her own, a stable future for her children, and a continued commitment to recovery.
Looking ahead, Amanda has even bigger dreams. Once she reaches one year of sobriety, she plans to become a peer support specialist, helping others who are walking the same path she once did.
“This place changed my entire life,” she said. “I want to be able to do that for someone else.”
Amanda’s story is a powerful reminder that with support, determination, and hope, transformation is possible. And today, we celebrate her success, not just in graduating from our family shelter, but in building a new life filled with purpose, stability, and promise.
