Mark’s Story: From Rock Bottom to Rebuilding

Mark’s journey has been anything but easy, but today, he stands as proof that recovery and second chances are possible. Nearly three years sober, Mark first came to New Directions during one of the darkest seasons of his life. Struggling with addiction, broken relationships, homelessness, and the weight of past mistakes, he knew something had to change.

Over the years, Mark worked hard to rebuild his life. After spending time in recovery housing, he suffered two devastating accidents while riding his e-bike, including injuries that nearly cost him his life. Unable to work or pay rent while recovering from a broken hip and other serious injuries, Mark found himself without anywhere to turn. That’s when New Directions welcomed him back with open arms.

“New Directions gave me a place to heal properly,” Mark shared. “They gave me support, friendships, and people who believed in me.”

While recovering, Mark stayed focused on his sobriety, attended NA meetings, and worked toward rebuilding his future. With support from New Directions and community partners, he completed the I-CAN program and now works for Goodwill. Today, he is preparing to move into his own place and hopes to return to school, possibly to help others struggling with addiction and recovery.

Mark now spends time encouraging others who are battling addiction and homelessness, reminding them that change is possible if they are willing to put in the work. His advice to others: “If you could spend 10 years messing your life up, you can spend six months trying to get it back together.”

When asked what New Directions means to him, Mark said it best: “It offers a new beginning.”
